ŠKODA Yeti City - Safety

ŠKODA Yeti

You drive, we care

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

ESC, or Electronic Stability Control, helps every driver to handle critical situations, when the car is getting into the skid. The control unit constantly compares current data about the driving behaviour of the vehicle with the preset values. If the values do not match, the control unit gives command to stabilize the vehicle. The stability program uses the abilities of ABS, ASR and few other special sensors. This allows it to prevent slipping or locking the wheels. The principle of its function is limiting the engine torque and braking the inner rear wheel in case of understeer, or outer front wheel in case of oversteer.
ESC provides significant help to the driver, but it still can’t overcome the laws of nature. The ESC can help the driver only if the limits of grip are not exceeded, at least on the wheels used to stabilize the vehicle.

Bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and dynamic angle control

Bi-xenon headlights with daytime running lights use projector modules with a xenon discharge tube for both low- and high-beam headlights. Low and high beams are switched by moving a shield in the projector module. Both low and high beams can swivel into turns. The swivelling mechanism is controlled electronically to optimally illuminate the corner. Headlights swivel into the corner at an angle of up to 15° (inner), or 7.5° (outer) from their straight-ahead position. The LED module of the daytime running lights (forming a strip on the bottom edge of the headlamp) not only has a longer life and lower power consumption, but also creates an elegant crystalline-design shape at the front of the car.

Airbags

The airbags act to prevent the contact of occupant’s body with the rigid components of the vehicle. This ŠKODA model may be equipped with up to 9 airbags.
Side airbags front
Side airbags, placed in the front seats of both driver and passenger provide effective protection of pelvis, abdomen and thorax in case of side impact.
Side airbags rear
Also rear passengers can benefit from protection provided by side airbags.
Up to 9 airbags
The Yeti's rigid body can be fitted with up to 9 airbags. The passengers can rely on complex protection provided in case of accident.
Front airbags
The driver is protected with front airbag in the steering wheel, while front passenger airbag (with the optional deactivation) is mounted in the dashboard.
Head airbags
Head airbags cover the side windows area and car’s inner structures from the front A-pillar all the way back to the C-pillar. They protect the heads of passengers in front and rear seats, providing maximum safety.
Knee airbag for the driver
The driver’s knee airbag is mounted in the lower part of the dashboard, under the steering wheel column, protecting the driver’s legs in case of frontal impact.

Flashing Brake Lights

When braking hard from the speeds above 60km/h, the brake lights start flashing automatically. After the car becomes stationary, the brake lights stop flashing and hazard lights are switched on. After taking off again, the hazard lights are switched off automatically.
This measure reduces the risk of rear-end impact, especially when approaching the traffic jams on highways or sudden braking in front of the unexpected obstacle.

Isofix anchoring points

Isofix anchoring points on the rear seats ensure better mounting of the children seats in the vehicle and provide its better attachment to the car’s body. This is important for safety in case of a crash.

Further anchoring points in the luggage compartment can be used for fixing the child seat by the TopTether system, which reduces the rotational movement of the child seat around the anchoring points’ axis. In case of an accident, this helps to slow down the child’s forward movement. TopTether is supplementary to the Isofix system.

Rigid Body Structure

High quality, rigid body structure is the essence of safety in all types of crashes. To achieve high durability of the monocoque, extremely strong materials were used, especially around the passenger area, where only minimal deformations are allowed.

Front and rear part of the vehicle provide maximum energy absorption during crash. Special engine mounts prevent its intrusion to the passenger area. In case of heavy impact, the engine slides under the passenger area, where it doesn’t endanger anyone.

The design of the steering wheel column limits movement of the steering wheel against the driver in case of the front impact. Placing of the pedals ensures that they slide away in case of impact, reducing the risk of the leg injury to the driver.

Other Safety Features

The ŠKODA Yeti is about safety without compromise. This compact SUV was awarded five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test in 2009 for its exemplary safety features. Add to above mentioned safety systems, for the Yeti Outdoor are following features available as a standard or option:

  • ABS keeps the wheels from locking during emergency braking or when braking on slippery surfaces.
  • MSR counters the locking action of the driving wheels which can occur when the driver decelerates on a smooth surface.
  • By increasing the braking pressure, the braking assistant helps drivers in situations in which emergency braking is necessary. This can lead to a significant reduction in required braking distance.
  • The ASR ensures smooth starting and acceleration without the wheels spinning on slippery surfaces.
  • Tyre pressure control keeps the driver informed about tyre pressure at all times.
  • The optional hill-hold control assistant helps drivers start uphill safely. The system activates itself on inclines of five percent or more and ensures easy and safe uphill starting without the use of the hand brake. The system keeps the car from rolling backwards or stalling.
  • For the ŠKODA Yeti all-road, a downhill assistant is available. State-of-the-art engine management uses engine braking action to enable in safe and controlled downhill driving. The downhill assistant easily and safely manages extreme downhill sections by keeping the driving speed at a constant rate, thus assisting the driver.
  • The optional Driver Activity Assistant warns ŠKODA Yeti drivers of impending fatigue. The system analyses the steering behaviour to evaluate the driver’s concentration. If the driver activity assistant detects a change in normal driving behaviour, it concludes that the driver’s concentration is decreasing and displays a visual warning with the following words: ‘Fatigue detected - please take a break’.
