ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback - Safety

from 27,590

The New ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback

Safety comes first

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

ESC, or Electronic Stability Control, helps every driver to handle critical situations when the car is getting into a skid. The control unit constantly compares current data about the driving behaviour of the vehicle with the preset values. If the values do not match, the control unit gives command to stabilise the vehicle. The stability program uses the abilities of ABS, ASR and a few other special sensors. This allows it to prevent slipping or locking of the wheels. The principle of its function is limiting the engine torque and braking the inner rear wheel in case of understeer, or outer front wheel in case of oversteer.
ESC provides significant help to the driver, but it still can’t overcome the laws of nature. The ESC can help the driver only if the limits of grip are not exceeded, at least on the wheels used to stabilize the vehicle.

Xenon headlamps

The Rapid Spaceback is the first ŠKODA car to feature an innovation in lighting technology –headlights with a low-energy xenon dipped beam. They generate a longer and wider beam of light than halogen lamps, compared to which they have 33% higher luminous flux and up to three times longer life. Because of their low output compared to standard xenon headlamps, they need not be equipped with headlight cleaning or dynamic inclination alignment. They emit a pleasant colour similar to daylight.

Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)

The EDL advantages are most obvious during acceleration or when driving up a hill with low traction under one of the driven wheels.
Side airbags
Side airbags, placed in the front seats, protect the thorax and pelvis of both driver and passenger in case of side impact.
Isofix anchoring points
Isofix anchoring points on the rear seats ensure better mounting of the seats in the vehicle and provide its better attachment to the car’s body. This is important for safety in case of a crash. Further anchoring points in the luggage compartment can be used for fixing the child seat by the TopTether system.
6 airbags
The main purpose of airbags is to prevent, with the help of the safety belts, the occupants’ bodies from contact with any rigid parts of the car, or at least minimise the consequences of this contact.
Front airbags
The driver is protected by a front airbag mounted in the steering wheel. The passenger’s front airbag (with optional deactivation) is placed in the dashboard.
Head airbags
Head airbags cover the window area and the car’s inner structures from the A-pillar to the C-pillar. They protect the heads of occupants on both front and rear seats and thus provide the maximum safety.

Antilock Brake System (ABS)

The electronic control unit continuously compares data from the speed sensors on individual
wheels. If abrupt deceleration of any wheel is detected, the hydraulics receive
a command to release the brake pressure, so the wheel resumes rolling.

The signal from the wheel speed sensor changes again and the ECU recognises
that the wheel is unblocked again. It is therefore able to transfer
the brake force again and the sensor gives command
to apply the brake pressure. Up to 16 such
cycles can occur each second.

The ABS consists of three main parts:

Electronic control unit
Wheel speed sensors

Safe body design

High quality, rigid body structure is the essence of safety in all types of crashes. To achieve high durability of the monocoque, extremely strong materials were used, especially around the passenger area, where only minimal deformations are allowed.

The front and rear part of the vehicle provide maximum energy absorption during a crash. Special engine mounts prevent its intrusion into the passenger area. In case of heavy impact, the engine slides under the passenger area, where it doesn’t endanger anyone.

The design of the steering wheel column limits movement of the steering wheel against the driver in case of a frontal impact. The placing of the pedals ensures that they slide away in case of impact, reducing the risk of leg injury to the driver.
