ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback - Technology

The New ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback

Proven modern technology

Comfort features

The ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback features many electronic systems to enhance its level of comfort, functionality and safety even further.
Instrument panel
The instrument cluster is well-arranged and easy to read. The instrument panel is located in the traditional spot behind the steering wheel, which is optimal from the driver’s perspective. With its clean, clear style the instrument cluster wonderfully complements the exterior design.
Acoustic rear parking sensors
The system for signalling the distance from an obstacle is a welcome help, especially when navigating through tight spaces. The distance from the obstacle is gauged by ultrasound sensors in the rear bumper. The driver is then alerted not only by an acoustic signal, but also visually on the display of the Swing radio. The interval between the sound signals shortens as the distance from the obstacle decreases. At about 30cm, it changes to the continuous tone.
Climatronic climate control
The computer controlled ŠKODA Climatronic climate control system provides the convenience of stable, automatically maintained temperature in the car’s interior. The Climatronic uses various sensors and elements to monitor and adjust the temperature, direction and speed of the air flowing into the vehicle. Climatronic is also able to compensate for the solar radiation with increased cooling, so the driver doesn’t have to adjust the difference by the knob.
Cruise control
Does your right leg hurt on the long motorway drives? Do you like to drive on top of the speed limits, but don’t want to get over them? Then the cruise control is exactly what you need. By pressing a button, you will save the current speed and the cruise control will keep it until you step on the brake, clutch or you switch the cruise control off again.
Gear change recommendation
Right choice of the gear ratio can save fuel and increase the drive comfort at the same time. Lower engine speeds result in lower fuel consumption and quieter engine operation. The gear change recommendation is presented on the display in the instrument cluster. The symbols in the upper right corner of the display confirms the right choice of the gear ratio, or recommends changing up or down.
Hill Hold Control
The Hill Hold Control (HHC) allows for easy hill starts without the risk of unwanted backward roll or need to use of the handbrake. It is activated automatically when the hill gradient is more than 5%, both when driving forward or in reverse. When the driver releases the brake pedal after stopping on a hill, the HHC keeps the pressure in the brake system for 1 or 2 seconds. In this interval, you can set off easily without rolling.
Power windows
Both front and rear windows can be conveniently operated by the driver.

Infotainment

To provide a pleasant driving experience, high user comfort and to make finding your destination easy, the Rapid Spaceback offers systems with intuitive controls and high overall quality.
Trip computer display
The central multifunctional display shows various trip computer functions, e.g. current time, gear change recommendation, trip computer, odometer (daily and total), fuel consumption, etc. The display is decorated with chrome rims.
Maxi DOT display
The central Maxi DOT display keeps the driver informed of various trip computer functions, outside temperature, current time and the distance travelled (daily and total). It also allows you to adjust the car's electronic system settings or monitor coolant and fuel temperature gauges via analogue indicators. The Maxi DOT display is decorated with chrome rims.
Entertainment and information in abundance
The supreme goal of ŠKODA’s engineers has always been to make driving a car as safe and as comfortable as possible. In addition to proven assistance systems for more safety, the ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback also offers a series of state-of-the-art multimedia systems.
Swing radio

The Swing radio is typical with its bespoke styling. One of its many handy features is speed volume control. When driving at high speeds, the volume increases automatically and returns to the original level after you slow down. Also, you will surely appreciate the RDS-TMC function, which serves to inform you about current traffic situations. Enabled with Aux-in external audio input (3.5mm jack), the Swing radio enables playback from external audio devices (e.g. MP3 player).

The GSM II telephone assembly

When connected to a mobile phone, the GSM II handsfree uses wireless Bluetooth technology to provide comfortable and safe telephone use while driving. It also enables A2DP audio streaming and can maintain two simultaneous Bluetooth wireless connections – one for a mobile phone and the other for external audio devices. The system can be operated using voice control, the Maxi DOT display, multifunctional steering wheel or an audio system touch display.

Aux-in, USB
With the Swing radio and Amundsen+ navigation system, Aux-in and USB outlets can also be installed in the car to play sound from mobile devices that have outlets for audio cables with USB inlets and a 3.5 mm jack. The connectors are located in front of the gearstick, close to the storage box conveniently placed for the mobile device or phone. Devices with a USB outlet are charged once connected, and the sound can be controlled from the radio or navigation system display.

Performance

Put simply, the range of engines for the Rapid Spaceback stand for driving pleasure and top environmental values. The Rapid Spaceback is available with a petrol or a diesel engine. These advanced power plants put out between 66 and 90 kW, while consuming a mere 4.5 to 5.8 l/100 km.

Green Technologies

The ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback is fitted with modern TSI and TDI engines, combining better performance with lower consumption and less emissions. Turbocharged engines in the Rapid Spaceback (the TSI and TDI engines, excluding the 1.6 TDI/66 kW with DSG automatic transmission) can be complemented by a set of sophisticated technical solutions to further reduce consumption and emissions - Green tec.
Save money and time with low rolling resistance tyres More...
Special tyres Using low rolling resistance tyres is a simple measure to lower both fuel consumption and emissions.

Lower rolling resistance is achieved by using a different rubber compound, specially designed tread and higher recommended pressure. These properties also help to prolong the tyre life. Changing the tyres less often not only saves money, but it’s also environmentally friendly.

DSG automatic gearbox The seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox (Direct Shift Gearbox) combines the advantages and suppresses the disadvantages of both manual gearboxes and ordinary torque converter automatic gearboxes. DSG enables quick, precise shifting and offers a high level of comfort at the same time. And what’s more, it even provides lower fuel consumption.
A great way for city drivers to cut down on fuel consumption and emissions More...
Green tec - low CO2 emissions
Green tec is an optional set of technologies to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The basis for lower consumption and CO2 emissions lies in the turbocharged 1.4 TSI and 1.6 TDI engines. Reductions in the monitored values are achieved using the Start-Stop system, brake energy recovery and low rolling resistance tyres.
No more wasting fuel and money More...
Start-Stop system
When the vehicle is stationary, the engine runs uselessly, while still consuming fuel and emitting pollutants. That’s why the Start-Stop system automatically switches the engine off after stopping the vehicle, reducing the fuel consumption of the engine. If the driver applies the brake pedal and comes to a complete stop, the engine switches off automatically. As soon as the driver presses the clutch to shift into a gear, the engine starts immediately.

Everytime you hit the brakes and slow down, you generate energy for your car. More...
Energy recovery
Energy recovery turns kinetic energy back into usable electricity. During engine braking, the alternator supplies the electricity to appliances and charges the battery. This saves fuel, which would be otherwise used on these tasks. When the car is accelerating or driving steadily, the car uses the electricity stored in the battery – therefore the alternator works at a lighter load in this mode. The fuel supply is adjusted to the lower power use, which results in lower fuel consumption.
