Limousine-like comfort in Skoda Superb

​AS AN impressionable young printing apprentice during the 70s, image was everything.

My first 'real' car was a Holden, it fitted well with what my colleagues were driving - Zephyrs, Vauxhalls and Ford V8s from the United States.

However, there was one young apprentice who dared to be different, the car the keen surfer drove was a Skoda Octavia combi. Although he was the butt of all jokes, the Octavia was the most practical for his lifestyle, and it was certainly the most reliable.

And they are the ingredients that make Skoda so well recognised today, the Czech Republic-built product caters for a market which demands versatility and efficiency.

At present, there's some fresh product landing here out of the Skoda factories, there's a new Fabia, and a new generation, rangetopping Superb has just arrived.

As before, the Superb is available in sedan and wagon variants with a host of models within the line-up - petrol and diesel power along with two (front) or four-wheeldrive.

The test car was a fourwheel-drive diesel-fuelled wagon and it lists at $58,900, the range starting at $45,900 and ending at $63,900 for a full spec 206kW, 2litre turbocharged, petrol-powered wagon.

However, the 2-litre diesel is the model for me.

Of course, as a car, it gets a lot of the componentry shared around the greater Volkswagen/Audi network, the big German conglomerate has Skoda as one of their subsidiaries. If you add Volkswagen's expertise and the engineering nous that characterises the Czech Republic then, quite obviously, Skoda product is certainly nothing to be joked about.

The Superb wagon is simply superb, it is beautifully-built, and for its price it certainly stacks up competitively against other high-profile European models.

The test car doesn't get all the trick gear, but it gets enough kit to promote almost luxury-like travel, and it gets the gear to rate it highly with its level of active and passive safety elements.

And it's worth taking a look at the Superb to see the incredible interior space it has on offer. It is huge inside, yet at just 4.85m it isn't an overly large car in terms of exterior proportions. In wagon form it also offers up to 1909-litres of load space (from 619-litres) and that doesn't compromise the leg room in the rear, interior space is overwhelming.

Up front sits a twincamshaft, 16-valve turbocharged diesel. It is rated at 140kW with a hefty 400Nm of torque available all of the way from 1750rpm to 3250rpm. If you take into account peak power arrives at 3500rpm, the engine is a real powerhouse through the midrange with forceful accelerator response if you need it. It drives through a sixspeed direct shift gearbox.

Effectively, it works like a traditional automatic but for swift, smooth shifts.

As mentioned, the test car was four-wheel-drive power is directed rearwards as grip is required.

There's no mistaking where Skoda are pitching the Superb wagon. The test car was fitted with some serious roof racks.

Although they were configured for bicycles, it's my guess skiers are a target market for the Superb.

Certainly, it is a car which The howould suit the recreational enthusiast who doesn't fit the mould of the traditional sports utility vehicle. The Superb is a dynamic highway charger. It cruises quietly and handles with dignity. It's fair to say it is softly sprung, but because it sits at just 1477m tall, it doesn't move awkwardly on the suspension in a corner, the centre of gravity is low, therefore body roll isn't an issue when pushed hard though the corners.

As you would expect, the Superb is also the worryfree car to drive at city speeds, it is light to drive and its dimensions are well disguised, it isn't cumbersome in close confines, and has driving modes which can be tailored to suit driver preference.

In terms of performance, the Superb in this form is a quick mover. It will scamper to 100km/h in 7.7sec, yet does so without taxing our fossil reserves.

Fuel usage is spectacularly frugal, Skoda claims a 5.1litre per 100km (55mpg) combined cycle average for the 1998cc diesel.

During testing time the readout was constantly listing around 7l/100km (40mpg) with an amazing 4.5l/100km (63mpg) often showing at a steady 100km/h (engine speed 1750rpm).

It's hard not to be impressed by the new Superb, it has limousinelike comfort along with driving manners which are a combination of performance and practicality. It is certainly a car which is underrated in this market.

Skoda's marketing slogan is Simply Clever - I wouldn't argue with that.
