Big dreams for a small grain
Meet Morgan Maw who is onto transformation on another level – she wants to make oats great again. Because when it comes to the grain family, quinoa may have the sex appeal of a superfood, but oats? Well, aren’t they just a little bit "nana"?
Big dreams for a small grain
“There are plenty of ingredients out there that are good for you, but finding a grain that grows so well in New Zealand and is so gentle on our environment is really something.”
SUSTAINABILITY... IT'S A SINCH
Meet Kim Struthers and Stephen James who are on a mission to get more people and their families off devices and on bikes, having adventures, and making use of the fabulous cycle ways that are popping up all over the country.
SUSTAINABILITY... IT'S A SINCH
“I call it brain food,” says James. “When I ride my bike, it opens up my mind. As I begin noticing things, I become more aware and start having ideas and thinking in a different way from when I’m driving.”
SUCCESS AT A SPRINT
Meet Phillipa Green who like many of us, wears a variety of hats. There’s her job as CEO of Breast Cancer Cure, her role as a mum to two teenage sons, and her passion for sprinting which has just seen her travel to Australia to compete against the best.
SUCCESS AT A SPRINT
“I’m probably a bit of an over-organiser. Everything is in my diary, from work appointments to my training sessions, to the kids’ sport. I like to have things in order in all areas of my life, so I don’t find it a stressful juggle at all,” she says. “It’s easy to fit things in when you’re passionate about them.”
RICH IN HEALTH
Meet Simon van Velthooven – a World Champion Cyclist, Olympic and Commonwealth Games medallist, grinder one in the Emirates Team NZ America’s Cup 2017 and all-round nice guy from Palmerston North.
RICH IN HEALTH
Simon is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s most driven and adaptable athletes – he could’ve applied his talent to more mainstream sporting codes but chose his own path based on passion rather than fame or pure financial reward. That makes his multi-code achievements even more worthy of celebration.
RICH IN CREATIVITY
Meet Evie Kemp – an Auckland based designer, creator, collector and Dulux Colour Ambassador. Evie’s talent for combining eclectic styling and design has allowed her to create original artworks and homewares that are found in thousands of homes worldwide and also to partner on collaborative projects with some of NZ’s top brands.
RICH IN CREATIVITY
Creating a successful business from her passion for design and creativity certainly inspired us. There is so much pressure in our society to take the road most travelled. Evie stayed true to what worked for her and the road less travelled led to a fantastic life.
RICH IN FAMILY
Meet Jane McAllister - mother of 14, grandmother of 23 and successful company owner of New Zealand baby clothing brand, Dimples. After not being able to find high-quality and practical clothing for her babies, Jane made them herself and established Dimples in 1992. “It's all about finding a happy balance between work, friends and family.”
RICH IN FAMILY
Driven by the desire to create high-quality, 100% NZ made products, Jane has brought these things together to create a successful business with a great reputation. The lines are blurred but family life is definitely intrinsic to her work life. Jane has done what many of us aspire to do – she has optimised her work life balance.
RICH IN COMMUNITY
Meet Te Arohanui Hawke - Kapa Haka performer and teacher, founder of kapa haka event, Ngā Rau o Te Kāhu. “Ki te waatea te hinengaro me te kaha rere o te wairua ka taea nga mea katoa” - if the mind is clear the spirit is free flowing and anything’s possible.
RICH IN COMMUNITY
Te Arohanui’s passion for teaching Kapa Haka to children in schools embodies the ‘Rich in Community’ category. Through Kapa Haka he installs a lot of confidence and pride into the children, along with introducing them to te reo Māori. We can’t always control the cards that we are dealt, but we can choose how we respond and react.
