At ŠKODA, we appreciate high performance – on two wheels or four – so we’re immensely proud of our ŠKODA Ambassadors. Congratulations to Sam Webster, Eddie Dawkins and Ethan Mitchell. ŠKODA Cycling - Our History

2 wheels to 4...ŠKODA has always been about the journey

Which is better? 4 wheels or 2? In the world of ŠKODA, the answer is both.

When co-founder Vaclav Klement bought a bicycle from a German manufacturer which broke shortly afterwards, he teamed up with bike mechanic Vaclav Laurin, and they began producing their own bicycles.

Cycling has remained important to us since that day and we've honoured that heritage ever since.

From the production of motorbikes in 1899, Laurin and Klement built their very first car in 1905 - The Voiturette A which could reach speeds of 25mph (which was very impressive at the time!)

A merger with ŠKODA Works, a large industrial company, in 1924 saw the ŠKODA name appear on an automobile for the very first time. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Pedal to Pedal...we have continued to push the evolution of transportation

We are engineers. In our 119 years of production history, we've broken boundaries. Our evolution from 2 wheels to 4 didn't see us just dip our toe into cycling at the start of the twentieth century, we remain firmly immersed. We love bicycles. A simple machine with endless possibilities, where precision counts more than brute force and every problem can be solved with a clever solution.

That's why we're an official partner of the key cycling events including Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta España. And of course, we still to this day make ŠKODA branded bicycles. They're pretty awesome.

Saddle to Seat...we help to make those unforgettable experiences

entered in 1901 saw the rider, Marcis Podsednike, as the only entrant to make it across the finish line?

Here's another good one – in 1936, the ŠKODA Rapid rallied 27,600km around the world without the need for any engine repairs and the model went on to win the Olympic Games Rally in the same year.

Today, we're still proud to be a part of unforgettable experiences from the saddle to the driver's seat.

Our riders fight the roads and climb mountains. They brave the wind and rain to compete against the world's greatest. Our drivers in their hatchbacks hustle over which radio station to listen to on the school-run, those in their 4x4s tackle tough terrain in their country pursuits. And ŠKODA is excited to be part of all these journeys.

Local Sponsorships - Our Support

Cycling New Zealand

ŠKODA is now the official vehicle sponsor of Cycling New Zealand and all their events. The match between ŠKODA and cycling is a natural one, seeing that our company originally started as a bicycle manufacturer in 1896.

Like Cycling New Zealand, ŠKODA sees cycling not only as a means of transport and as a sport, but also as an activity that draws people together. The partnership will allow Cycling New Zealand to focus on the development of their programmes and athletes at every level, making cycling more accessible and bringing all facets of the sport to New Zealanders.

At the top level,  ŠKODA will have official vehicle rights for National Championship events. Members of the New Zealand men's cycle sprint team will be supported with vehicles from ŠKODA and the New Zealand cycle team uniforms will now feature ŠKODA branding.

At the more social level, the partnership with ŠKODA gives Cycling New Zealand the freedom to commit more energy to developing pathways for cyclists. The organisation is working towards developing more places for people to cycle.  They are also committed to bike safety courses in schools and bringing more coaches in to help train young riders.

Cycling New Zealand acknowledges that getting a big name sponsor on board gives them a boost. This is particularly true with ŠKODA, because of what ŠKODA means to cycling globally.

Avantidrome - The National Cycling Centre of Excellence

Avantidrome, The Home of Cycling – the National Cycling Centre of Excellence is a world class velodrome connected to world class facilities for BMX, road and mountain biking.

Škoda extended our international support of cycling with an exciting partnership with the National Cycling Centre of Excellence. This world class velodrome in Cambridge which opened in April 2014, giving our cyclists a unique environment where champions will develop and inspire the public to participate.

The challenging world of professional cycling places high demands not only on the athletes themselves and their equipment, but also on the technical and organisational support of the teams during the whole season. This includes support teams who need to always be on hand, all the way through the race. And that's why they rely on Škoda vehicles.

Cycling Centre of Excellence

The development of the Cycling Centre of Excellence started back in 2011 as part of an expansion of high performance sports in New Zealand. The principal objective is to promote cycling at all levels within New Zealand. This includes improving high performance cycling outcomes, increasing participation in cycling and nurturing new talent.

The centre features an indoor track constructed to Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Category 1 standard. The velodrome arena is 110 metres long and 65 metres wide. It has no supporting columns, but rather a series of angled perimeter frames supporting 6 metre high, curved steel frame 20 metres above the imported Siberian pine timber track.

The centre also has ready access to world-class training competition facilities for road, MTB and BMX cycles, alongside accessible community facilities.
